Flowers are beginning to bloom, gardeners are getting out and planting this year’s veggies and old and young alike are taking their first dip into the still chilly lake water. Many people are out watering their yard and hopefully adhering to South Tahoe Public Utilities District water conservation program. “Water the right way and the right day” requires local residents with odd number home addresses to water on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday.  Those with even number home addresses may water Monday, Wednesday and Friday. There is no landscape irrigation allowed on Saturdays which is the districts day of highest use.  Make sure you follow this watering schedule or you could be surprised with a fine in the mail!

Another way to be sure that spring is on its way is the influx of new listings in the South Lake Tahoe real estate market. Typically, many home owners take their home off the market during the snowy winter months, and re-listing once the snow has melted.  This is holding true this year as our Realtors head into their busy season.

Since our winter was rather mild this year, the real estate market kept a good amount of steam during the winter months.  This is in part due to bank owned homes floating in the market.  Currently, as of May 14th 2012, there are 228 single family homes for sale in South Lake Tahoe.  Of those 228, forty-one are a distressed sale which means they are either a bank owned property or a short sale.  And out of the available 228 properties in South Lake Tahoe, only 30 are priced below $250,000.  The lack of homes in the $250,000 and under price range makes it a very hot market with many homes receiving multiple offers.

It's the Last weekend for Spring Skiing!

All through town the grass is growing in the front yards of homes and flowers are beginning to push up through the ground. With the warm weather in the Lake Tahoe area, it only seems fitting that the last day of skiing in South Lake Tahoe is this weekend.

As always, all ski seasons must come to an end, and the end of the 2011/2012 Ski Season is in sight.  This weekend, Heavenly and Kirkwood will have their closing day on Sunday April 29^th.  So if you’re itching to get a few more turns in you better do it this weekend or forever hold your skis…Or at least until next season.

Since the snow fall was so light this year, many people have already packed up their winter equipment and begun to turn to spring and summer sports.  While trails were covered deep in snow at this time last year, the trails are mainly snow free right now making access to hiking and biking excellent! And with the current precipitation South Lake Tahoe is currently experiencing, the river and streams are sure to be flowing for fellow kayakers!

A blue bird day in Meyers South Lake Tahoe!

Miracle March has arrived leaving South Lake Tahoe looking like winter again! Over the past weekend the town was slammed with a massive winter storm which in the end dropped a total of 3 feet at Lake level and 5 feet at the local resorts.  But in typically Tahoe fashion, the storm passed and now the sun and blue skies have peaked out making it a glorious blue-bird powder day on Monday March 19^th.  Today March 20^th is officially the first day of spring and the sun is shining one again.  But even with the recent snowfall one can smell spring in the air and it’s hard to miss the busy squirrels and birds already making their spring debuts.  As the snow begins to melt, many of us will start to visualize our summer gardens and projects we hope to accomplish.  To make that vision a little clearer, here are a few tips to get your wheels turning.

1. Start seeding your herbs and get ready to transplant! 

Sprout your own seeds in an egg crate!

Just because it looks like winter outside doesn’t mean you can’t start your garden inside. Grab an old cardboard egg carton and fill it with dirt.  Select the seeds you would like to sprout and follow seeding directions.  Some seeds take as little as 3 days before they start to germinate.

2. Map out your back/front yard plans.   Maybe you’ve wanted to put a stone walk way in your backyard or add grass. Or it could be time to redo that front planter and add some additional flowers boxes.  Whatever your outside aspirations are, be sure to plan and map ahead.  Take your pencil to paper and start to plan where things will go.  This will let you start gauging exactly how much money these projects will take and help you stick to the plan.

3. Sharpen tools and blades.  Might as well get a head start on prepping your tools! This way, when the time is right, you’ll already have your gardening arsenal ready for attack! Take your shears and lawnmowers into get a tune up and get ahead of the game.

Has Spring arrived...or is Winter just getting started?

As I type, South Lake Tahoe is under a Winter Storm Watch, Lake Wind Advisory and Hazardous Weather Outlook. All of these statements point to the notion that we are not out of the winter woods yet! While we are definitely looking at some moisture coming this way, the verdict is not yet in as to if we will be seeing the elusive fresh Pow or just a spring rain shower.

Right now the skies are clear and blue but the winds are starting to pick up.  Stay tuned to see if our “Miracle March” comes through or if we are taking the fast track to Summer time fun!
