Lake Tahoe Real Estate Neigborhoods – Markleeville
Markleeville is a popular destination for many offering a wide range of outdoor activities including its most popular park, Grover Hot Springs State Park. With a population around 200, Markleeville has the small mountain town feel that many desire when looking for a second home close to Lake Tahoe to really escape the hustle of city life.
Markleeville is the host city for the “Death Ride”, one of California’s most well known annual century rides. Despite the name, it is for serious thriving cyclists only. In 2009, just 2200 riders of the 3,000 who started the organized ride completed the 129 mile course going over five mountain passes and gaining over 15,000 feet of elevation.
Markleeville has an elevation of 5,531 feet and is located off Hwy 89. The driving time from Markleeville to the city of South Lake Tahoe is around 45 minutes. The town is filled with mining history. The Alpine County Courthouse which was the original site of Jacob Marklee’s cabin is now an official California Historical Landmark.
